Nobody owns data quality

Approvals and reconciliations live in inboxes. Nothing is wrong until the month it is, and then nobody was watching.

Why it breaks

No structure or ownership

You said you could not answer this one without asking around. That is the finding. A number nobody can trace on the spot is a number nobody has tested, and it is usually carrying something.

Three questions to ask your team

Ask these before you commit anything else.

  1. Who owns the inventory number between month ends, by name, not by department?
  2. When a variance appears, who is expected to explain it, and how long do they have?
  3. What happens to an unexplained adjustment: is it investigated, or absorbed?

Ask them separately, not in a meeting. Agreement in a room is not the same as agreement in the data.

What the answer looks like

The month a CFO actually has to explain

What in this month needs my attention, and what is it worth?
